Inspiring journey: the struggled and success of Ambati Rayudu

From teenage students to heretical rebel to India’s most talented yet underrated cricketer. Life has come to a full circle for the 34- year-old Indian Cricket team batsman Ambati Rayudu.

Last year was bitter for Ambati Rayudu. First, he failed to impress selectors while playing for CSK with his 282 runs in 17 matches in the IPL 2019. Second, he wasn’t picked for the World Cup despite multiple injuries in the Indian cricket team. After Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the tournament with an injury, selectors picked Rishabh Pant. Adding to the frustration, Mayank Agarwal was the replacement for the injured Vijay Shankar.

Ireland Cricket board trolls Ambati Rayudu

Rayudu was disappointed by the selection committee for not giving him the chance to play despite him being one of the 5 players in the stand by for the World Cup. Things got worse when Ireland Cricket offered permanent citizenship to the Indian cricketer.

While sharing a document of permanent residence permit, the Ireland cricket board tweeted: “Agarwal has three professional wickets at 72.33 so at least Rayudu Ambati can put away his 3D glasses now. He will only need normal glasses to read the document we have prepared for him. Come join us Ambati.”

Announcing retirement from the International cricket

This triggered Ambati’s emotion and he announced retirement from the International cricket.

He wrote an e-mail: “I would like to bring to your kind notice that I have come to (the) decision to step away from the sport and retire from all forms and levels of the game. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the BCCI and all the state associations that I have represented which include Hyderabad, Baroda, Andhra, and Vidharbha”.

Few months after announcing retirement from his cricket career, Ambati Rayudu made a huge U-turn. He wanted to be back in the cricket.

The HCA’s CoA later sent out a mail saying, “This is to inform you that Rayudu has withdrawn his announcement of retirement and has made himself available for the shorter format of the game for HCA 2019-2020.”

Rayudu is one of the less utilized talents of Indian cricket

The injury to Rohit Sharma on the tour of England gave Rayudu a chance to prove his game. Once again the batsman made his opportunity. In the 3rd ODI played at Nottingham, he scored 64* and finished the game for India. In the 5th ODI at Leeds, Rayudu once again scored a half-century at the chase.

Rayudu’s performance for Chennai Super Kings

In IPL 2020, which has been organized at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, UAE, against Mumbai Indians,  Ambati Rayudu scored a half-century (71)* in the support of the IPL team ‘Chennai super Kings’. He again proved his mettle of being in a team. He was a man of the match.

In the post-match presentation, CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni praised the right-handed batsman. “Right from the start, I rated him as someone who can give a good start. He can play both fast bowlers and spinners very well. He is someone who doesn’t look like a big hitter but clears the field every time he plays the big shot”, he said.

Rayudu was declared Man of the Match and he looked quite emotional throughout the post-match presentation.

Even Watson, who opens with Rayudu for CSK, said in an interview: “He an incredibly talented batsman and I think so it was a loss for the Indian ODI team for not picking him in the World Cup squad”.
